| Gorringe Bank is situated on the Europe-Africa plate boundary at the eastern end of the Azores-Gibraltar fracture zone. It has two summits. Gettysburg Bank to the southwest and Ormonde Bank to the northeast. We applied the 40Ar/39AR stepwise heating method to date six samples of the alkaline volcanic rocks. Two gabbros from the Ormonde Bank and a dolerite from the Gettysburg Bank. The results suggest that the alkaline volcanism lasted probably for less than 6 Ma(66-60 Ma). Although the nature of this volcanism precludes any subduction feature during its setting. the alkaline volcanism of Ormonde is probably linked to Upper Cretaceous/Eocene compressive tectonic events. | Diversos parâmetros fornecidos pela análise de solo têm sido usados no Estado de São Paulo para discriminar as respostas à adubação de culturas. Neste trabalho foi avaliada a eficiência desses parâmetros como critério de interpretação, através de estudos de correlação entre resultados de análise de solo e respostas de milho à adubação com nitrogênio, fósforo e potássio em 25 ensaios. Nenhum critério se revelou eficaz para nitrogênio. O teor de fósforo solúvel em H2SO, 0,05N foi eficiente, não tendo havido melhora apreciável das correlações pela consideração dos teores de matéria orgânica, argila ou pH. | Neohattoria Kamim. is a monotypic genus of the Jubulaceae (= Frullaniaceae) with a single species, N. herzogii (Hatt.) Kamim., known from central to northern Japan and the southern part of the Kurile Islands. The present genus was segregated from Frullania by Kamimura (1961; sub. nom. Hattoria Kamim. nom. illeg., non Schust., 1961) on the basis of the branching type, the shape of the first leaf and underleaf on branch, the total lack of secondary pigmentation, the uniform cell structure of the stem in cross section, and the strongly toothed leaf lobes. | The genus Nipponolejeunea Hattori was established by Hattori (1944) based on Pycnolejemea pilifera Steph. from Japan. Its primary important generic characters include 1) the two gynoecial innovations, 2) the triplicate perianth, and 3) the long cilia on leaf- and underleaf-margin. Hattori (1944) also assigned Pycnolejeunea subalpina Horik. to Nipponolejeunea, thus admitting two Japanese species in that genus. Since then, the genus Nipponolejeunea has been repeatedly discussed, especially by Mizutani (1961) and Schuster (1963) from taxonomic points of view. | Although sponges are by no means unimportant organisms, in biomass and diversity, of the Curaçao coral reefs, very few scientific studies have been undertaken in this area involving sponges. To date, apart from taxonomie studies by Arndt (1927) and myself (Van Soest, 1978, 1980), only the boring sponges received attention (e.g. studies of De Groot, in progress). The main reason for this, no doubt, is the confused taxonomy of West Indian sponges. While taxonomie studies are in full progress (but are necessarily slow), it is now already possible to present sufficient data to allow certain identification of the more common reef forms by non-taxonomists for ecological or other purposes. | Abstract Climatological and monthly means are computed for radiosonde data at Manaus and Belém (1968-1976). Geopotencial height and wind data at upper levels show evidence of the meridional movement of a strongly divergent high pressure system associated with the area of maximum convection. At low levels, the winds, particularly at Manaus, show an annual cycle linked to the meridional displacement of the equatorial trough and its accompanying area of maximum convection (upper level high pressure system). On the average, the precipitable water (Pw) is greater at Manaus than at Belém. | The Gao region located in the northeastern part of Mali was the largest producer of both large and small ruminants in the country before the drought of 1972-1974. Since then, particular trends have been observed in livestock production: (a) small ruminant herds almost reached their pre-drought level in 1976, whereas cattle herds were at 23 percent of their pre-drought level; (b) in 1976-1977, local consumption of small ruminants attained their highest level of the 1970's, whereas cattle consumption decreased at least by a factor of four; and (c) exports of sheep and goats have increased after the drought, while cattle exports are almost nil.
